Hope you enjoy this fabulous story written by one of our guests:
My wife Cynthia wanted to do something special for our 15th wedding anniversary, so she researched pet friendly cabins in the Flagstaff area. Cynthia’s internet hunt revealed a superior candidate, the Arizona Mountain Inn (AMI), and consequently we enjoyed a stay of two nights in Cabin 1. Our recue dog Harley really liked the enclosed backyard: he was fascinated by all of the new smells (and the squirrels).
It so happens that I was a resident of AMI 42 years ago. I completed geology field camp for NAU’s geology program in July 1976. Not knowing what to do with my new geology degree, I hung around Flagstaff while I figured things out, living for 6 months in Cabin 12 with two friends (also recent NAU grads).
The Wanek Family of course owned and managed AMI at that time. I remember Ray Wanek as an easy-going, friendly landlord, and cannot recall any gripes about our stay. I don’t know if it was the remote proximity of Cabin 12, or maybe our partying was tame by AMI community standards.
The AMI property is little changed after 42 years (I do wonder who that old guy is on the porch of Cabin 12). The layout is exactly the same, and I am thrilled no one “improved” AMI with paved roads and sidewalks. The general upkeep of the cabins inside and out impressed us both.
It is obvious that the current owners wish to retain the original charm of the property. The cabins are wonderfully outfitted: modern without being too modern, somewhere between rustic and glamping.
It will not be another 42 years before Cynthia and I return to the Arizona Mountain Inn.
